FrogLube Solvent Pump Spray Review
As you know, I recently bought the FrogLube CLP for my Remington 870 shotgun. The CLP in liquid and paste form works pretty well, and it has a very interesting smell and lubes the shotgun nicely. They don’t clean the shotgun as good as Shooter’s Choice Shotgun and Choke Tube Cleaner but it still works pretty well.
FrogLube Solvent is advertised to remove carbon and residue. I was very optimistic after the first review and applied it to the barrel of my shotgun after training with about 50 birdshot rounds, 10 buckshot rounds, and 10 slugs. I cannot say that the barrel was very dirty as there was some residue and some marks of plastic on there from the wads. The pump spray is very convenient to use and I really liked it. But FrogLube Solvent isn’t as viscous as classic gun cleaning oil. It is more like water consistency. That makes it a little difficult to apply to the walls of the barrel.
I have applied a “generous amount” of CLP Solvent to the barrel as the instructions say. I used a nylon brush to clean the barrel. The instructions recommend using the nylon brush but I am not sure why. It looked like the FrogLube Solvent cleaned the barrel pretty well. The patches were dirty at first but then I saw a clean patch coming out of the barrel. When I looked inside the barrel, I was surprised because the solvent removed the residue but not the plastic. I tried applying solvent and scrubbing the barrel again but I ended up getting the same result. So, I used the Shooter’s Choice Shotgun and Choke Tube Cleaner and it dissolved the plastic after about 10 minutes.
I think that result could be different when used with a spiral (tornado) brush, which cleans the barrel better than any other brush. But I did everything that the instructions told me to do.
What is good about FrogLube Solvent is that it doesn’t have a smell at all. It can be used at home without any problems. Other solvents have a very strong smell and require very good ventilation.
I decided that I am going to use this solvent for such parts as the magazine tube, bolt, bolt carrier, receiver. Those parts usually don’t have much dirt and can be cleaned with this solvent. But for the barrel, I will continue using Shooter’s Choice because it is more effective and saves a lot of time.
Can I recommend it? I am not sure about that. You can use it only for the parts which are easy to clean and for the barrel if you don’t have much residue inside. The biggest advantage of this solvent is that it doesn’t have a smell and it is environmentally friendly. However, it is not a very good cleaner.
