Remington 870 Police Forend

04 August 201015 comments Accessories, Upgrades

As I wrote earlier, Mesa Tactical Shotshell Carrier doesn’t work with long forends, so I had to choose the shorter one.

I have planned to use Hogue forend but when I have tested it on the shooting range it turned out that it is not a good idea to use Hogue forend and Knoxx stock. When shotgun moves backward after the shot Hogue forend moves together with your skin and it hurts. This happens because Hogue forend is overmolded and allows very good grip. It is fantastic but not with Knoxx stock.

So, I started to search for another short forend and have found police forend. I have tested it on the shooting range and it was great. It allows a good grip and can be used with Knoxx stock.

Here it is:

Actually, I don’t like that Knoxx stock has many limitations. It cannot be used with S&J and Vang safeties and now it is not comfortable to use it with Hogue forend. So, I may look for a different stock. If you have any advices, please leave a comment.

Try to get a Hogue stock and forend set, in my case the forend was much better than the Speefeed forend you are using and the older style police forend.
The stock also is great and u can use any safety let it be vang, etc.

If you want a Ar 15 style stock, the only good one is the one made by mesa tactical but it is quite expensive, but it is the way to go if you want an Ar15 stock.

Btw the big problem with the choate extension are the spring and follower, that’s why i did change the spring and follower of my choate with a Wolff spring and wilson combat follower, now it is amazing.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I completely agree with you. Choate magazine spring doesn’t look like quality product. Especially when compared to Nordic Components spring which looks and works great and has black finish.

Yes, Mesa Tactical product is very expensive but it looks like a very good stock.

Yes, I really want to try Hogue short LOP stock. I’ve heard a lot of good words about it.

The only downside of the hogue stock is the buttpad, which is quite sticky otherwise is an amazing product.

I just installed this police forend to replace the much larger Knoxx one that came with my Spec Ops NRS stock and this is much better, especially since I have relatively small hands. I was able to find one pretty cheap on Ebay. The Knoxx one is really bulky and heavy.

I own a slightly modified 870 Tactical with factory provided ghost ring sights. I have found through trial and failure that the extra $ spent for top quality accessories is well spent. I went through the Basic Shotgun course @ US Training center last summer, 846 rounds in three days, mostly shot, some slugs and some buck. Very demanding course both for the operator and the gun. The only mechanical “problem” I had, was that the choke loosened up a couple of times. I had the most non-stock firearm there. Modifications-MesaTactical six shot side saddle(I have had a TacStar, one of those $ deals and a failure), MesaTactical four round side saddle(right side mount), MesaTactical LEO six position colapsable stock, Mako three rail forend, Vang Comp high dome safety, and a V-Tac two point sling.
This course is a great way to find out what works and what doesn’t, the 4 shot side saddle…..gone after the first day, and the V-Tac 2 point has been replaced with a TacticalLink single point bungee sling.
The locking ring on the buffer tube for the Mesa stock caused a fairly irritating abrasion on the backside of my hand at the base of the thumb, a problem that has been corrected by Mesa with a redesign of the lock ring. I have installed the modified ring with very good results although I have not done any real intense shooting since the change.
I am extremely satisfied with MesaTactical both with their products and their customer service.

My 870 came with the police forend, that was the one I wanted. I took some 60 grit sand paper and shaped it a little better for my grip style, also the semi rougher finish from the 60 grit gives a better wet hands grip especially with leather gloves that are wet. I am not a big fan of the ar 15 type stock, I even switched mine out with a fixed stock on an M4 when I was overseas. For me the stock that came on my 870 is the best one I have tried, it just pulls in and feels great. I added a limbsaver sleeve to add about an inch and an 1/8 to the stock and like the longer LOP. I can’t wait to go to a shoot with a bone stock 870 and see the looks I get.
