My name is Jon. I am actually going tonight to order my first 870 – an 870 Police Magnum.

I have been asking questions lately so I can be sure to get what I want the first time around, I don’t have a lot of money right now and would hate to waste it on something I won’t like.

You didn’t ask for it but I am located in Bismarck, ND, USA.

  2. Dennis March 20, 2010

My name is Dennis. I am gathering information to modify my Remy. I’m hoping for more comments and opinions either from articles or readers submitting them regarding options and choices. (I.E. Bead vs ghost sights vs optics vs laser? Or Commentary from readers as to why they chose to modify their SG in a particular configuration.) I have a Vang Comp barrel, I’m trying to decide to replace the Knoxx SpecOps Folder. Since this will be my Primary HD/SHTF weapon, the questions I have are: Does this stock offer enough of recoil reduction? Is the convience if a folder worth it? Unfortunately, I live in the People’s Republic of California. Great weather, bad socialist, tax and spend nanny state. Nice to meet you.

    Hello Jon,

“I am actually going tonight to order my first 870 – an 870 Police Magnum”

That’s a very nice gun and will serve you very well right out of the box.

    Take care, J.R.

    Hello Dennis,

“Unfortunately, I live in the People’s Republic of California. Great weather, bad socialist, tax and spend nanny state”

    Right there with ya man.

    Take care, J.R.

Hi Jon, nice to meet you! 870 Police Magnum is a very good choice! They are very expensive here in Ukraine (more than $1200) that is why I have Remington 870 Express ($700).

  6. Vitaly Pedchenko March 22, 2010

    Hi Dennis,

    Nice to meet you!

I’ve heard that Knoxx folder is not as good as it looks like.

First of all, it sticks out above the shotgun when folded, so it is not very compact.

Second thing is that it is impossible to install a side saddle with Knoxx Folder stock.

Third thing is that you will have only one recoil-reducing system. There are two systems in Knoxx SpecOps stock.

Fourth problem is that wire-frame stock is less convenient than the M4 style stock and doesn’t allow to adjust length-of-pull.

  7. Dennis March 22, 2010

Those were my thoughts too…. Which recoil reducing stock do you think is better? The Knoxx SpecOps or Mesa Tactical with the Endine recoil reducer?

I know the price is about double for the Mesa Tactical.

  8. Oodin March 22, 2010

Thanks for the welcome. I think I’m really going to enjoy the Police Magnum.

  9. Damian March 22, 2010

Hi, my name is Damian and I live in Canada. I have Remington 870 Magnum express and I use my shotgun for waterfowl hunting.
    Vitaly, thanks for good job!

  10. admin March 23, 2010

Dennis, unfortunately, I do not have experience with “Mesa Tactical with the Endine recoil reducer” but I am very satisfied with my Knoxx stock.

  11. Vitaly Pedchenko March 23, 2010

    Hi Damian!

Nice to meet you. Thank you for your good words.

  12. Mike March 26, 2010

My name is Mike. Love your blog. I own an 870 and the only thing I’ve done to it was change it to the Knoxx Stock. Keeping it simple.

Love to see all the other upgrades out there, including the ones that most people don’t talk about much, like the follower and safety.

    Good stuff !

  13. Vitaly Pedchenko March 27, 2010

    Hi Mike,

Nice to meet you! I am happy you like the blog.

    Hi Vitaly !
    Thanks for the blog !
I bought my rem 870 Combo in January 2009. I almost finished my mods.
Now its Rem 870 + Hogue Foreend, SpeedFeed Tac III stock, HiViz sights on 20 inch barrel and TruGlo on 28 inch, WilsonCombat side-saddle, WilsonCombat safety button, A-line 3-point sling, Remington SuperCell, TacStar +3 magazine tube and VangComp follower.
Almost finished it but I’ll add some touches later (your blog have halped to understand some things)

    Alex (Ukraine, Berdyansk)

  16. J.R. March 29, 2010

    Hello Via Sierra,

I can’t say this is the “best sling” because I have not tried them all but I really like the Rocky Mountain Tactical sling, they are very affordable and come in single/double/triple configurations. I have the dual config sling single/double and it’s great. https://www.rockymountaintactical.net/?page=shop/index&

Another very popular sling is the Gear Sector, I have no experience with these but I have read many good things about all of their products. http://www.gearsector.com/browse/category/slings/

    Take care, J.R.

Hi bud Jim here from New Zealand thanks for this great site, do you know if the Tactical Rem Choke on the new 870 Express Tactical can be removed to take a normal Rem choke?

  26. Jeff Stinson September 20, 2011

Hi my name is Jeff, and I live in indiana. I have just purchased my first 870 express magnum and i must say got a amazing deal on it at 150 dollars!!!!!!!!!! I got the gun to hunt deer and it has the fully rifled 2 3/4 and 3″ barrel what would be the best slug for it I thought of going with remington sluggers but not sure Thank you!!!!

  27. Bill Doyle December 4, 2011

    Howdy fellas!
I live on a mountaintop in northern New Jersey. I am an avid bird hunter and an primarily a scattergun guy. I am on the Trap committee at my hunt club in Orange Co.NY and my wife and I shoot a good amount of Trap during the spring/summer/fall. I also reload for both 12 and 20 gauge. I have the first shotgun I ever bought that I have recently converted to a HD weapon. It’s an 18 year old 12 gauge Express that now sports:
    Knoxx SpecOps buttstock
    Surefire forend
    20″ RSS barrel
2 round Scattergun Tech mag extension.

I also plan to add a Messa Tactical 6 round Side Saddle, a CDM barrel clamp and an oversized Safety button.
I DO have an important question. I need to remove the dimples in my mag tube and just saw the price Brownells charges for their dimple remover at almost $80! Yikes! For a tool I may never use again it’s a bit much no? Am I gonna have problems if I drill/grind them out and hit it with some bluing? Any constructive advice would be most gratefully appreciated!

  28. Jon Elkin December 7, 2011

Hi, my name is Jon Elkin and I live in Arizona. I own a Remington 11-87 Police, an 870 Marine Magnum, and an older 870 Sportsman which I have completely rebuilt into a home defense gun to Remington Police specs except with a KG Gun Kote finish instead of Parkerize. I have trained in the two-day and the four-day tactical shotgun courses at Frontsight, Nevada, using the Marine Magnum and the Sportsman. I have not yet trained with the 11-87. I noticed during training that Remington 870 shotguns held up and performed very, very well. I happened upon this site and have found it informative and interesting. I have subscribed to the newsletter and want to thank Mr. Vitaly Pedchenko for starting and maintaining the blog.

  29. Name Angus December 7, 2011

Message Hi Bill,Vitaly did an article on dimple removal, just put “dimple removal” into the search on this website and it should pop up.

  30. Vitaly Pedchenko December 20, 2011

Jeff, Bill and Jon, nice to meet you! Welcome to the blog! :)

Angus is right. Bill, no need to pay $80 for dimple remover, just search for “dimples” in the Search of the blog and you will find several ways to remove dimples easily.

  31. Oleg December 27, 2011

Hi guys, I am from Ukraine and receintely bought Rem 870 Express Tactical. Rem is my first gun and i know way too little about shooting, not mentioning anything like upgrades. I was seeking for any useful info about 870 and i`m lucky to be here now ! Cheers, Oleg

  32. Vitaly Pedchenko January 1, 2012

Hi Oleg! Nice to meet you!

  33. Mike G January 8, 2012

Hi, Mike here. I was a M-79 and 12 ga guy in the US military in the late 80′s. Love my 870 Express synthetic +2 mag ext. I have always been a shotgun guy and always will be, the most useful and loved gun in the world. Great site, thanks for your work here.

P.S. I keep my 870 sleak and slim, fast on target, no hang ups, just like me plain, simple and very loud…LOL!!!

  34. Vitaly Pedchenko January 11, 2012

Hi Mike, nice to meet you! :)

  35. Name Dusty January 18, 2012

I have used the 870 in law enforcement since 1972 when I was a rookie. i am a 870 fan for many reasons. CQC no other weapon puts fear into a burglar or armed robbery suspect like the 870 with 00 buck or a slug. I am a firearms instructor for the department I work for now, as well as maintain all the department weapons. Say what you want about M-4′s or A-4′s but nothing beats the reliability of the 870.

  36. Vitaly Pedchenko January 19, 2012

    Dusty, nice to meet you!

  37. Bill Doyle January 19, 2012

Vitaly, I finally bit the bullet so to speak and took a dremel type tool to my dimples and slowly ground them down. Cleaned it up with a wire brush attachment on said tool and (after blowing out the barrel with an air hose and wiping the tube down to remove any residue)several swipes of B-C Super Blue applied with a spare Hoppe’s 12 ga mop and she now holds and cycles 7 rounds of 2 /34″ in the tube very handily!

  38. Vitaly Pedchenko January 21, 2012

Bill, nice to hear that you have upgraded your shotgun! Do you have any photos? :)

  39. Bill Doyle January 21, 2012

    Vitaly,
When I get the barrel clamp, follower and side saddle I will post some final pics!

    Hello Guys,

At the beginning, sorry for my possible mistakes in english …!!!
It makes a long time i didn’t practise.
I leave in the French West Indies, i bought my first shotgun a REM870 DEER since few weeks and i’m interested by your experience and your advises to custom it.
At the beginning i think to read your posts & perhaps asking you to make the good choices.

    See you !!!

  41. Vitaly Pedchenko February 7, 2012

BFG, welcome to the blog! Nice to meet you!

  42. Marsian February 7, 2012

Hio, i live above the baltic sea, i have a vanilla 870 Express, got it a year or something ago, use it for hunting and plinking when i can
But i mostly shoot skeet, it is kind of hard to get used to it after using my dads Winchester European 1500 XTR and an old Husqvarna 615
I have a hogue fore end and stock, the LESS LETHAL orange one with the text painted over, i like the fore end better than the factory one but not the rear stock
I wish i had a straight stock with a pistol grip, i really do not like integral grips
I have looked at the speedfeed 4 and the mesa tactical one online, but that does not really help much
I should have gotten a deluxe model or something… the express is kinda cheap lookin and it jammed a couple of times

  43. Alkist February 7, 2012

Express looks classic, not cheap ;)
