Candewman (CDM Gear) Clamps and Tactical Shotgun Accessories
A lot of Remington 870 owners are looking for a solution which will help them to add a light to a shotgun. There are a lot of different options and each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. But all shotgun owners agree that flashlight is crucial for a home-defense or tactical shotgun. Target acquisition in low light conditions is difficult without an additional source of light. Tactical flashlight will help you to identify a target and decide what to do.

Shotgun Flashlight Clamp
Some time ago I had a post about CDM clamps for tactical flashlights. And today I am happy to write a full review about them. Looking at the CDM clamps I feel like a caveman looking at a spaceship. Their design is innovative and I haven’t seen anything like them.
Let’s start with my favorite MOD-C clamp
It has a fantastic design which unites a barrel/magazine clamp and a flashlight clamp. This allows this clamp to be extremely light and low-profile. MOD-C clamp allows you to install any 1 inch flashlight and operate it with your weak hand.

MOD-C Clamp with Flashlight
CDM Gear clamps are very sturdy. Here is a comparison of the CDM clamp and the TacStar clamp so you can see it yourself:

TacStar and CDM Gear Clamps
One of the big advantages of the CDM Gear clamps is that they are modular and you can add or remove parts to have the configuration you need. For example, you can add a rail or a quick detachable sling swivel.

Next clamp in this review is the BMT Clamp with 6 slot rail

BMT Clamp with 6 slot rail
This clamp allows you to add a flashlight like the Streamlight TLR-1 or any other using additional mounts. You can move clamp close to your weak hand and operate the flashlight easily.

Flashlight and a Weak Hand
There is one additional advantage. CDM clamps position the magazine tube properly and this allow spring to move freely. Clamps like the TacStar pull the magazine tube and barrel together too much.
I highly recommend CDM Gear clamps. They are sturdy and beautiful. You can use them to attach a flashlight, laser or sling swivel to your shotgun. Also, you can use BMT clamp as magazine/barrel clamp.

Please note that these clamps are already very popular and sometimes out of stock.

“Looking at the CDM clamps I feel like a caveman looking at a spaceship” That’s the funniest comparison I have ever read.
Very nice review Vitaly, CDM really has some great products.
Take care, J.R.
Do you have any experience with the Mesa Tactical barrel clamp? I would be interested in your opinion as to how they compare with the CDM Gear clamp. These are the two I am looking at, but don’t have physical access to either.
thanks,
jon
Jon, thanks for your question. Unfortunately, no, so I can’t tell you anything about them. But if you are going to install a flashlight on a shotgun, I think you can’t find something better than MOD-C clamp because it works as both magazine/barrel clamp and also holds flashlight.
Jon, I have a Mesa clamp on my 870 and it works perfectly. The fit is excellent and it looks great and is very well built. I have no experience with CDMs gear so I am unable to compare the two but from what I have read it is an outstanding product as well.
Take care, J.R.
Mesa builds a stout clamp for sure. The main difference is that if you want to take the Mesa clamp off, you have to take the light off, the rail off and then undo 2 opposing screws to remove it. The Mesa clamp weighs 2.4 oz without the rail and it’s about 1.5″ wide.
The CDM gear clamp weighs 1.1oz without the rail and it’s about 1″ wide. You don’t need to remove any rails to remove the clamp because there is an access hole built in and there is only 1 screw going into a threaded steel insert that needs to be undone to remove the clamp.
With the MOD-C, you don’t even need to remove the light to remove the clamp so the total package is lighter still when you take into account that you don’t need a rail or a scope ring.
Those are the main physical differences between the two. The rest is what ever you like to see on your shotgun and what suits your situation best.
Wow, thank you all for the prompt responses. Still haven’t made up my mind, but you all certainly helped make it an informed decision.

I put my name on the CDM several months ago and have yet to hear back from them. I think it might be faster to just make my own. Too bad, I really liked the looks of the CDM clamps!
Yes, several months ago we were having some difficulties with a vendor and didn’t know if we were even going to have product. That’s all changed today with the 2nd generation and an extremely reliable vendor with experience in weapon accessory and parts manufacturing.
the cdm mod-c clamps are a work of art. too bad they’re out of stock everywhere on the internet.
