S&J Hardware Shotgun Follower
Posted on December 18, 2009
Last weekend I have tested S&J Hardware Shotgun Follower. I have made about 250 shots and didn’t have any malfunctions.

S&J Hardware Follower for Remington 870 Shotgun
This shotgun follower is the best I have ever used. Let me start with advantages it gives to a shotgun owner:
1. Bright orange (close to red) color.
2. Tail which prevents spring from kinking and improves feeding.
3. Allows to check an empty shotgun magazine by your finger.
4. It has slots in the sides so it can be used in the Remington Express and other non-Police models (which have dimples in magazine tube).
5. Followers are CNC machined from 2″ thick piece of DuPont Delrin® material. Which is a type of teflon impregnated plastic. Delrin is hard enough to machine, soft enough for use and very slippy. So its ideal for a shotgun follower.
This follower is not hollow inside and doesn’t have weak points (like Scattergun follower). It will not break down with cleaning products and hard use. I was looking for a such follower for a very long time.
I highly recommend to use this follower and think that this follower is the best on the market.

CDM Gear (Candewman) Clamps for Lights, Lasers and Barrels
Posted on December 9, 2009
When a shotgun owner starts working on his Remington 870 shotgun he has a lot of options of different upgrades and accessories. Most of us choose from the list of accessories in the most popular shops (Brownells, MidwayUSA, Cabelas etc.). But many good variants are worth searching for. For example, safety button from S & J Hardware, magazine extension from Sage International and barrel, flashlight/laser clamps from CDM Gear.

CDM Gear Clamps
Let’s talk about barrel/flashlight/laser clamps by Candewman (CDM Gear). Almost all barrel/flashlight/laser clamps are look alike. They all have same design and that was a really pleasant surprise to see something new on this market. The first clamp by CDM is a MOD-C flashlight clamp for 1″ lights.

MOD-C Clamp by CDM
The design of this clamp is simple and very interesting, I have never seen anything like that before. This clamp has a lot of advantages, such as low profile and light weight. Also, you don’t need to have two clamps on your shotgun (barrel clamp and flashlight clamp) you can have just one MOD-C clamp which works as both magazine clamp and flashlight mount. You can mount an optional rail on the other side. And I can’t stop saying that design of this clamp is unique and I simply love it.
Next clamp by CDM is MOD-C clamp for 3/4″ lasers.

MOD-C Clamp for Lasers
The construction of this clamp is the same as of the MOD-C clamp for flashlights. It looks great and you can use it to add a tactical laser to your shotgun.
Next clamp by CDM is The BMT clamp:

The BMT Clamp
It can work as an ordinary barrel/magazine tube mount. But BMT clamp has several important advantages. You can install optional rail (3-slot or 6-slot) to add tactical accessories to your Remington 870 shotgun. And also it is the lightest clamp on the market (weight is 1oz).
Next clamp in this review is another unique idea by CDM Gear, it is the MT clamp:

MT Clamp
So what makes it unique? The idea behind this clamp is to have a ligh/lasers/QD swivel dock t mount that you don’t need to remove in order to take the barrel off. It fits any 1″ magazine tube on just about any shotgun. It can be used with 3-slot or 6-slot rails. You can attach it to your magazine tube and forget about it. No need to remove it each time your disassemble your shotgun.
Here is another sample of how it can be used on your shotgun:

The MT Clamp by Candewman
I have contacted Scott Dew, the owner of the CDM Gear with several questions about his clamps. It was very interesting to communicate with him. I think that the best things are made by people which love what they do and Scott is one of such persons. He loves to produce different accessories for shotguns and our favorite Remington 870.
Scott told me about his plans and different ideas he have for the existing and future products. And it is nice to see a person which is in constant search for a ways to improve his products.
I highly recommend CDM clamps because they are unique, lightweight and will revolutionize the market of shotgun clamps and flashlight mounts: http://www.candewman.com

ATI Shotgun Heatshield Test and Review
Posted on December 7, 2009
I have tested my new ATI Shotgun heatshield this weekend. It is very convenient especially for a speed shooting, you don’t need to think about the hot barrel when you reloading your shotgun or when you hold it or pass to a friend.
First test was on Saturday. I’ve made about 100 shots using slugs, birdshots and buckshots. Everything was fine but then I saw that heatshield moved for about 1 inch to the front. Also, heatshield hit the rear sight and it now requires adjustment. The problem was easy to fix, you need to tighten all screws very tight. Otherwise heatshield will not stay in place.
Here is photo to show you how your screws should be tighten:

- ATI Heatshield (Screws Tighten)
Second test was on Sunday with all screws tighten. I have put about 100 shots again (slugs, birdshots and buckshots) and this time everything was great.
Heatshield is a good addition to a a shotgun but it’s not a must. I am not sure if this particular heatshield is the best one, I want to test the plastic heatshield in the nearest time.
And yes, it will scratch the barrel, so maybe it gives not that much of advantages as I thought.

Blackhawk Knoxx PowerPak Modular Cheek Piece System
Posted on December 3, 2009
I haven’t seen many Blackhawk Knoxx PowerPak reviews on the web. I have read one very negative review and several positive ones. That is why I want to share my experience with you.
What is Blackhawk Knoxx PowerPak Modular Cheek Piece System?
It is modular cheek piece with ammo holder and watertight storage compartment. It can be installed on Knoxx SpecOps Stock.

Blackhawk Knoxx PowerPak Modular Cheek Piece
My brother is owner of the Fabarm SAT 8 Pro Telescopic. This shotgun has Knoxx stock, which can be installed on Remington 870. That is why Blackhawk Knoxx PowerPak can be installed on both Fabarm and Remington 870. Recently my brother installed Blackhawk Knoxx PowerPak on his shotgun.
Installation
Installation of the Knoxx Powerpack is not difficult and takes just 15-20 minutes. The only one problem is that screws are very small. But when it’s ready it is easy to snap cheek on the stock.

Knoxx Powerpak Modular Cheek
Construction
This cheek looks good, shells are hold reliably in place.
Advantages
I think that Knoxx Powerpak is a good alternative to the receiver mount shell holders. High cheek will be useful for people which have holographic sight/scope installed. I am not sure what can you do with a watertight storage compartment but instruction says that it can be used to store earplugs and spare batteries there.

ATI 12GA Shotgun Heatshield for Remington 870
Posted on December 1, 2009
The main purpose of the shotgun heatshield is to protect hands from burns. I have bought it because barrel gets very hot after big number of shots. Also, you will not need to worry about the hot barrel when reloading.

ATI Shotgun Heatshield
There are several types of the heat shields for shotguns on the market. Steel ones and plastic ones. I have chosen heatshield by Advanced Technology International. If you have barrel with rifle sights (like me) you will have to make some modifications to it.
First of all you will need to make a hole for the rear sight:

ATI Remington 870 Heatshield
It is not very difficult to do. Then you will need to do something with sharp edges and paint them.
Installation is not a big deal. Heatshield slides over the barrel, turn it upside-down to slide under the rifle sights.
Attention: you will need to sand some parts of your forend which touch the heatshield. Otherwise forend will not work properly with heatshield installed.

Of course it adds some weight to your shotgun but it is not critical. Shotgun looks great with this upgrade. I will test it on the shooting range this weekend and will write about my impressions.
