J.R. sent me information and photos of the Mesa Tactical Low Tube Stock Kit for the Remington 870. And I am more than happy to share this information with you. It is rather difficult to find good photos of the Mesa Tactical Telescoping Stock Conversion Kit for Tactical Shotguns, so J.R. did a very good job and we all can enjoy the great photos he made.

I received the Mesa stock kit today. This is a Mesa Tactical low tube stock kit for the Remington 870. it comes with a mil-spec M4 AR-15 five position adjustable stock, a cast aircraft aluminum stock adapter which is CNC machined and anodized with a Type III Class 2 mil-spec finish, a Hogue pistol grip, a 1 1/4″ quick release sling swivel and all necessary hardware for installation. The tools necessary for installation are included minus the M4 stock castle nut wrench which is necessary to tighten the stock to the adapter. Installation was easy and took about 25 minutes. I am very impressed with this stock kit, it is very solid and well designed and fits the 870 perfectly. The cheek plant is very comfortable and very smooth. I am really looking forward to sending some down range.

Remington 870 for Home Defense

Great Blog you’ve got here. I just thought I’d share with you and your readers my 1979 870 Wingmaster. It has been retired from deer hunting and is now currently performing home defense duties.

This 2 and 3/4″ chambered 870 originally came with wood furniture that included a grooved “police” forend and a 21″ smoothbore improved choke slug barrel with rifle sights. The original modifications included a TacStar magazine extension giving a 7+1 loadout, a Choate HighVis orange follower, a TacStar 6 round sidesaddle, a magazine clamp mount “shoot me” light and a sling.

After some practical usage, the shortcomings became apparent. First it was too heavy with a full loadout and 6 in the sidesaddle for the wife to use and the full length stock and short forearm didn’t help either. I managed to find an used set of synthetic youth model stocks with a longer forend. The stock is 1 inch shorter than the original.

I still wanted a decent loadout so I kept the TacStar extension but I did ditch the sidesaddle – it has just proved to be too awkward. The Choate follower was also kept.

For house duty, I ditched sling but I did put the magazine clamp mount light back on. It is located on the left hand side rotated up so that it overlaps the forend and is lined up over the finger groove. I can just use the thumb of my support hand to activate. I’m still not sure if it is all that useful but we’ll see!

The shorter stock makes this weapon much easier for my wife to handle as does the longer forend. The short stock doesn’t bother me at all, in fact I think I can mount the 870 faster. With the longer forend, she doesn’t have to “reach out” to grab it and I think it helps to guard against short stroking.

So there you have it! Not very exotic compared to some of the other “tactical” rigs out there but, it works for us.

Here in Greece it is only permitted to own smooth bored shotguns and they are mainly used for hunting. Red-dot scopes also require special permits (which I have) and are only issued to registered marksmen and only for use on a shooting range. You are not allowed to hunt with ANY type of scope enhancements. I only fire my gun at the range and 99% of the time I shoot slugs.

12 Gauge, 4 Mag. Cap., 20″ Fixed Improved Cylinder Barrel. (SKU 25565). This is one of the best smooth bored slug hunting guns one can buy for use with rifled foster or brenneke type slug. It can also be used with all types of shot. It is not very effective with sabot slugs. Sabot slugs should only be used with the rifled barrel version of this gun and are a little more accurate and effective to approx 150yrds, but it not as versatile. The IC smooth bore is extremely effective and accurate up to 100 yrds with all types of foster or brenneke slugs – it is not at all brand specific and grouping is always very tight. It is as accurate as my 6MOA red dot sight allows me to be. After all most shots extend max to 50-75yrds allowing respective accuracy of approx 3-4MOA at that range. I have zeroed my gun at 75yrds.

The Deer gun does not come with any swivels for sling attachment. This is a great quality product, but the strange thing is that the replacement magazine cap is actually a much heavier duty and better quality cap than the original.

Good quality and practical piece of equipment. Well displayed brand name “Remington” which really adds oomph!! to the gun.

“The Vang follower works excellent, I cycled 21 rounds with no problems & the big hole is a good indicator of a unloaded weapon. The sage mag tube is excellent quality although it has a phosphate finish so it looks gray but that’s OK with me and if someone didn’t like it a little BBQ paint would fix it right up, it comes with the nut, barrel & mag clamp which has a sling mount & +3 spring. Just so you know I will be getting a 20′ barrel like yous with rifle sights to match the +3 tube. I also attached a pic of the forend strap I installed. I saw one on a moss I had to have it! It is nothing like the moss version, I did this my self & cut slots in to the forend & used sling screws on the strap. Love the website & I love my 870!”

Remington 870 Magazine Follower (Scattergun Technologies)

Follower Scattergun Technologies (Wilson Combat)

Recently I was experimenting with my Choate magazine extension and broke the center part of the Scattergun Technologies follower (it stuck and I had to add some pressure to it), so it is not as reliable as I thought. Replaced it with aluminium follower. I think that metal follower slides in the tube better than the plastic one.

Attention: new Remington 870 shotguns have two “dimples” in magazine tube and Scattergun Technologies follower will not work with them. You will need to drill out the dimples or modify follower.

Here are some pics of my budget tactical 870 build. It has a Streamlight TLR-1 modified so the mount does not sit under the forend, a Remington sling, a Mesa Tactical barrel/mag clamp with quick release swivels, a leapers saddle scope mount and a Barska 1×42 red dot sight (cheap and effective). A Tanks Rifle Supply oversize safety arrived today and a Mesa Tactical low tube telescoping stock kit is on the way. I will be adding a King Armory muzzle brake and a Sage International +3 mag extension asap.
