Remington 870 Safety Buttons: Factory, Vang, Scattergun

There are three the most popular safety buttons for the Remington 870 on the market today: original factory safety, Vang Big Dome Oversized Safety and Wilson Combat Safety (Tactical Response Jumbo Head Safety by Scattergun Technologies).

A lot of shotgun owners prefer to replace the standard factory Remington 870 safety because it is rather small and in a stress (combat, self-defense) situation it maybe difficult to quickly disengage it. Some people like it as it is.

The enlarged safety allows you to quickly find it with your trigger finger and disengage it as fast as possible. The larger safety obviously has many advantages.

Factory Remington 870 Safety
Factory safety works just fine, it is durable and the only one in this review which has a red stripe which is visible when safety is disengaged. Some people like it and think it doesn’t need replacing. The one of the possible advantages is that it is more difficult to snap the safety off accidentally.

Vang Comp Systems Large Speed Dome Head Trigger Safety
The VCS Big safety is very popular and many have it installed on their Remington 870 shotguns. It is very big and dome shaped. I really like its round profile. It is almost impossible to miss Vang safety when inserting a trigger finger in the trigger guard.

It is a good choice but you should know that there are some issues with VCS safety. It sticks up even when disengaged and some may find it not very comfortable for their trigger finger. Another problem is that it is not possible to use it with Knoxx recoil suppression stock because “it will cause product failure and possible injury”. Another possible problem is a material it is made of, some think it is too soft and I agree with them. When I replaced Vang safety after about a 2-3 months of use I’ve seen clear marks of use on it. There were no such problem with a factory safety which I used much longer.

Scattergun (Wilson Combat) Tactical Response Jumbo Head Safety
This is my favorite one! It is close to a factory one but it has a jumbo size head which is very easy to find and disengage. Also, it doesn’t stick up when disengaged and can be used with Knoxx stocks. It looks durable but I will have update in several months of use.

Knoxx Stock and IPSC

Posted on September 1, 2009

I have seen a lot of discussions about the use of the Knoxx recoil suppression stock in IPSC competitions. Some shooters believe that it is prohibited under this rule:

22. External modifications such as weights, or devices to control or reduce recoil are specifically not allowed, except for recoil pads fitted to the rear face of the stock of the shotgun.

Other think that it can be installed because it is not an “external modification”.

I decided to contact the IPSC at the rules@ipsc.org to find the answer. I was very pleased to receive answer from Neil Beverley, IPSC Shotgun Director. And now I want to share the truth about use of the Knoxx stock in IPSC.

“Knoxx recoil suppression stocks can be fitted as a direct replacement of an existing stock under Point 23 of the division rules.”

“Point 22 of the rules prevents any additional weights from being added externally to a stock.”

Also, Neil sent these two links to the IPSC Global Village where you can find more information:

So, the short answer is Knoxx recoil suppression stocks CAN be used in IPSC.
