My $0.05:
In my case it took about a year of training to start shooting pistol-gripped (Pachmayer Vindicator) 870 with the same speed and results in IPSC stages that standard shotgun (off-score only due to rules prohibiting stockless shotguns in IPSC). But after I've spent time and efforts for training - I can say that I can grab pistol-gripped gun WSHTF. Otherwise it is strongly recommended to use full-stock shotgun due to better results of non-traind stuff. IMHO.

P.S. By the way - this is a great site you have! :)
